ABOUT MIKE

Since being elected Sheriff in 2016, I’ve been full speed ahead—and I have no plans to slow down. This page offers just a glimpse of my work over the years, but to truly see the impact, I encourage you to visit the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office or follow them on Facebook.

My wife, Penny, and I have been honored to attend countless community events—ribbon cuttings, fundraisers, parades, service projects, and more. These experiences have reinforced what I’ve always believed: Livingston County is the best in the state. While challenges remain, our community stands as a model of collaboration and cooperation, proving what’s possible when people work together.

I also recognize the unique strengths and spirit of the other communities in the 22nd District and I look forward to listening, learning, and representing their voices in Lansing as well. Together, we can build on our shared values to move the entire district forward.

PROVEN LEADERSHIP IN PUBLIC SAFETY

Since taking office as Sheriff in 2016, I have led both the Corrections and Field Services divisions with a commitment to innovation, accountability, and public safety. My team and I have implemented programs and policies that enhance community protection, improve rehabilitation efforts, and strengthen partnerships across Livingston County. Here are just a few of our key accomplishments:

  • Solving a 40-Year-Old Homicide: Bringing long-overdue closure to a grieving family and demonstrating our relentless pursuit of justice.

  • Combating the Opioid Crisis: Established a Vivitrol Program in partnership with Livingston County Community Mental Health and implemented a Medically Assisted Treatment (MAT) Program to support opioid users upon release from jail.

  • Enhancing Jail Security: Introduced two trained K9 units to detect contraband and improve facility safety.

  • Supporting Schools & Youth: Partnered with L.E.S.A. to address truancy and literacy issues, while also increasing the number of School Resource Officers to ensure safer learning environments.

  • Strengthening Community Outreach: Created a Community Outreach Unit to collaborate with schools, nonprofits, and service providers, working together to address local challenges.

  • Achieving Statewide Accreditation: Led a full policy and procedure overhaul in our Field Services division, making us the first Sheriff’s Office in Michigan to be accredited by the Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission.

  • Cutting Costs for Taxpayers: Partnered with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan to reduce healthcare costs for inmates requiring off-site medical treatment.

  • Leading Statewide Training Initiatives: Hosted Michigan’s first-ever mock riot training exercise, bringing together local, state, and federal agencies to prepare for large-scale emergency situations.

These achievements would not have been possible without my highly dedicated and motivated staff. I encourage you to visit the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office website for more details, including our annual reports that showcase the full scope of our efforts to keep our community safe.
